The expert’s opinion: to say that this fountain pen is a marvel is an understatement, especially when you hold the object in your hands and identify each of its details in particular. For those who are not yet familiar with the art of lacquer, they will discover it in this object, each of which has been made and signed by the artist’s hand. As for the nib, it glides over the paper with unequalled ease, and whatever the variations and pressures, it does its job with incredible brilliance. This beautiful fountain pen, once stored in its box, should be remembered by the owner for a long time. As with love stories, it is a matter of course…

1911 Maki-e Autumn Leaves Fountain pen by Sailor – a true work of art for incredible writing

In imperial Japan, objects made using the maki-e technique were highly prized by royal families and military leaders as they symbolised power above all else. Today, this lacquer technique is still used for precious objects, including some fountain pens. The Autumn leaves from Sailor is a superb example of this.

Its brilliance attracts us immediately, but it is the magnificent motifs on the barrel and cap that attract our attention. The craftsman applies a layer of urushi lacquer to the fountain pen before drawing the designs with ultra-fine brushes. These designs are then delicately sprinkled with gold powder before a second layer of lacquer is applied. The autumn leaves, created in relief, literally seem to fly in the wind. This delicate work of meticulous precision, which requires uncommon patience and attention, is signed with the artist’s name on the top of the body. As all the steps are manual and non-reproducible, each piece is of course a unique work.

The base of the pen on which the lacquer is applied is made of resin. All its trims, the clip and the various rings, are gold-plated. The connoisseur will recognise the famous central ring on which the brand name and the year of its creation have been engraved. The thread of the grip is made of metal.

Its nib:

The 14-carat gold nib is plated with 24-carat gold. Beautifully engraved, it is only available in size M.

Oui, probablement ..
