King of Pens Tamenuri Kuro-beni Fountain pen by Sailor – A limited edition of 120 pieces worldwide
After the spectacular release of the KOP Tamenuri Murasaki a short while ago, Sailor is reusing the old traditional Tamenuri lacquer technique for its brand new King of Pens. This technique involves applying an undercoat of lacquer in a colour defined by the artist – here a bright red (“beni” in Japanese). The Japanese master lacquerer then applies several other coats of semi-opaque lacquer, finishing with a final coat of transparent lacquer to allow the colour to develop over time.
Initially very dark (“kuro”, meaning black in Japanese), it will eventually lighten with time and daylight to reveal a dark burgundy hue. Kuro-beni is therefore a reddish black or blackish red. In Japan, it was used as the base colour for expensive kosode (short-sleeved kimono) in the early Edo period.
The sumptuous urushi lacquer :
Many layers are needed to achieve such a result, but also a considerable investment of time, since each layer requires a drying time that can vary from 3 to 7 days. This King of Pens takes around ten months to design. Artist Koshu Nishihara has hand-painted his signature and the serial number on the barrel. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, lacquer has an incredible capacity to resist corrosion and impact. As a result, this type of fountain pen has an exceptional lifespan that can easily be extended over several generations.
Sailor designed its King of Pens Tamenuri Kuro-beni in ebonite and stripped it of its trims to leave all the room for the splendour of the lacquer. The section is made of resin. Like all KOP, the threaded section is like a magnificent gold-plated timepiece. It also has two small windows so you can see how much ink is left and when it’s time to refill your fountain pen.
The nib:
Sailor has equipped its model with a magnificent, beautifully engraved 21-carat gold nib which is available in M and B sizes.
You’ll receive your King of Pens Tamenuri Kuro-beni fountain pen by Sailor in a splendid lacquered black box, along with its converter, a cartridge, a fabric kimono case and a cloth to allow your to take care of the fountain pen.
