King of Pens Tamenuri Murasaki Fountain pen by Sailor – Limited edition of 100 pieces worldwide
After a two-year hiatus, Sailor is using the extraordinary Tamenuri technique again for its new King of Pens. The Tamenuri lacquer technique used by the brand involves applying an undercoat of lacquer in a colour defined by the artist – in this case a dark purple. The Japanese master lacquerer then applies several other coats of semi-opaque lacquer, finishing with a final coat of transparent lacquer to allow the colour to develop over time. Initially very dark (brown-aubergine), it will eventually lighten with time and daylight until it reveals a purplish hue (murasaki in Japanese).
Sailor designed its King of Pens Tamenuri Murasaki in ebonite and stripped it of its trims to leave all the room for the splendour of the lacquer. Many layers are needed to achieve such a result, but also a considerable investment of time, since each layer requires a drying time that can vary from 3 to 7 days. This King of Pens takes around ten months to design. Artist Koshu Nishihara has hand-painted his signature and the serial number on the barrel.
In addition to its aesthetic appeal, lacquer has an incredible capacity to resist corrosion and impact. As a result, this type of fountain pen has an exceptional lifespan that can easily be extended over several generations.
Like all KOP, the threaded section is like a magnificent gold-plated timepiece. It also has two small windows so you can see how much ink is left and when it’s time to refill your fountain pen.
The nib:
Sailor has equipped its model with a magnificent, beautifully engraved 21-carat gold nib. Available in M and B sizes.
