Custom 823 Amber Fountain Pen by Pilot – a fabulous model for smooth writing

Created in 2001, the Custom 823 quickly became a flagship model at Pilot for several reasons, two of which are its filling system and the size of its nib.

A fountain pen from the demonstrator family, the Custom 823 is made of ultra-resistant acrylic resin, tinted with an absolutely beautiful amber colour. This colour is further enhanced by the gold-plated trims: the superb ballpoint clip recognisable from the Japanese brand, fine rings on the barrel and cap and the splendid central ring engraved with the model name and brand name, both surrounded by stars. The ends of the body and cap stand out nicely with their shiny dark brown colour, both matching the section.

Let’s turn to the famous internal mechanism: it is simply unique at Pilot as it is a vacuum filling system. In order to fill the fountain pen, the knob on top of the barrel is unscrewed and pulled out: the piston comes out of the reservoir to its stop point (seal). Then dip the fountain pen into the ink bottle and do the opposite by pushing the piston into the barrel (before screwing the knob back in). This is when the air-ink exchange takes place and the reservoir fills up (to 3/4).

Note that the body of the model is particularly large, offering a very large ink capacity (2.5 ml) = about 2.5 times a conventional converter. Furthermore, when the plunger button is completely screwed in, an exclusive safety valve closes the ink tank. This means that there is no risk of leakage, even at very high altitudes (e.g. in a plane).

The nib:

As far as the nib is concerned, Pilot has chosen to equip the model with a n° 15 nib, larger in width and length (24 mm long) than the usual n° 5 nib, certainly in accordance with the large size of the fountain pen. The nib is beautifully engraved in 14 carat gold and is available in sizes F, M, B et S (Signature). The S nib is the equivalent of extra large writing. It is suitable for writing at a fast pace and quickly writing full and uninterrupted strokes slightly (pleins et déliés).

The Custom 823 Amber fountain pen by Pilot will be delivered to you, set on a lovely light grey cloth, in a box with a beautiful 70ml bottle of black pigment ink. This bottle also has an internal reservoir to make it easier to refill your fountain pen, even when there’s very little ink left in the bottle. Simply turn the bottle 180° (cap downwards) and return it to its normal position: the internal reservoir will have filled with ink.

Precision and caution:

Precision: before use, hold the nib up and unscrew the plunger knob by 1 to 2 mm to open the safety valve.

Precaution regarding the black ink that comes with the Custom 823: the ink contains pigments, but is not indelible. When using this ink, it is therefore advisable to clean your fountain pen before refilling the converter.
