The expert’s opinion: I was already familiar with the Homo Sapiens in its very first version in 2010, and I was bowled over at the time. Since then, the brand has improved its masterpiece, particularly in terms of the material itself, which has a particularly soft feel – incredible for hardened lava. The resin, of course, plays a major role in this. The quality of the materials used is undeniable: in addition to lava, bronze, titanium and 18-carat gold. The trims are quite simply splendid, including the central ring, the finial and the famous (articulated!) clip symbolising Florence’s Ponte Vecchio. The Crystal Dream model has definitely won me over… The addition of this window in the body has taken Homo Sapiens to a new level: from splendid, the fountain pen is now sumptuous. This opening onto its intimacy gives it an unparalleled touch of elegance. As for the nib, previously made by a third party, for some years now it has been designed by the brand itself. I was impressed by both its feel and its suppleness… The Homo Sapiens Crystal Dream is now one of my favourite pieces.

A unique model, Homo Sapiens is made from the basaltic lava of Mount Etna, which has been catalysed by resin. This innovative material is the result of a patented formula kept secret by the Florentine brand. It is highly resistant to heat, impact and corrosion. It is the combination of these two materials that gives the fountain pen its extremely soft feel. Let’s add that it also absorbs moisture from the hand when writing.
With the Crystal Dream, the brand has replaced part of the lava body of the Lava Bronze with a large transparent crystal resin window. This allows you to admire the internal mechanism and the ink in the large reservoir. A transparent ring, engraved with the model’s name, reveals the ink contained in the small reservoir.
The Homo Sapiens Crystal Dream features a vacuum filling system with a double “Power Filler” reservoir. Patented by Visconti in 1998, this mechanism fills the two communicating tanks with ink, but also isolates them from each other. So you can take your fountain pen on a plane without any risk of ink leaks. They hold an impressive 3.6 ml of ink.
To fill the fountain pen, unscrew and pull the knob at the top of the barrel: the titanium plunger extends from the reservoir to its stop (seal). Next, dip the fountain pen into the ink bottle and perform the reverse operation, pushing the piston back into the barrel (before screwing the knob back in). This is when the air-ink exchange takes place and the reservoirs fill (3/4 full).
The cap is closed using the Visconti hook safety system, known as the ‘gag system’. A slight twisting motion is all it takes to close the fountain pen, while you open it by pushing the cap down and twisting it slightly.
Visconti chose gold-plated bronze for the attributes of Homo Sapiens in reference to the Bronze Age, when the first writing systems were invented. The brand has adorned the cap with two rings and its famous laser-engraved articulated clasp. The finial at the top displays the brand’s logo. Finally, a pastille adorns the top of the body.
Visconti has equipped its creation with a superbly engraved 18-carat pink gold nib. It is available in five sizes: EF, F, M, B and Stub 1.1.
