Today, Sailor is exceptionally making available a small number of pens from its Japanese allocation, offering collectors a final opportunity to acquire this remarkable writing instrument.

The 110th Anniversary Kurogane is arguably one of the most distinctive fountain pens Sailor has produced in recent years. Released in 2021 to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the brand founded in 1911, it forms part of a commemorative trilogy comprising the Premium, Kurogane and Shirogane models, each representing one of Sailor’s core values: Authenticity, Technology and Design. Kurogane (黒鉄), a Japanese term referring to black metal or black steel, embodies the technological dimension of the collection.

Abel Black technology:

Crafted from stainless steel, the Kurogane features an innovative electrolytic colouring technology known as “Abel Black”, which gives the pen its deep black appearance while preserving the natural look and feel of the metal. Unlike painted coatings or plated finishes, this process creates an ultra-thin black oxide layer whose colour is produced through light interference, eliminating any risk of peeling or flaking.

Because the colour becomes an integral part of the metal itself, it offers outstanding resistance to wear and the passage of time. A true demonstration of Sailor’s expertise, the Kurogane combines proven craftsmanship with cutting-edge innovation to create an exceptional writing instrument.

Impressive both in weight (76 g) and diameter (17 mm), the Kurogane features a clean, cylindrical silhouette. The cap is crowned with a striking transparent resin dome housing Sailor’s gold emblem set against a gold background. In place of a traditional clip, Sailor has incorporated a discreet raised section that prevents the pen from rolling while contributing to the balance and purity of its design. It is engraved with the words “Since 1911” in tribute to the founding year of the Japanese company.

Its silver-coloured trim is finished with nickel-chrome plating, while the black-coloured trim features an ion-plated finish.

The nib:

The two-tone 21-karat gold nib, partially rhodium-plated, is engraved with the Sailor logo and the inscription “110th”. It is available in Fine (F), Medium-Fine (MF) and Broad (B) nib sizes.
