Ukiyo-e Urushi Hokusai Blue Fountain Pen by Taccia – a flamboyant model for a smooth writing
The term ukiyo, meaning “image of the floating world”, originally describes a sad world where nothing is constant. In the Edo period (1603-1868), its meaning shifted towards an epicurean view of life. The term e means “painting, drawing”. Thus ukiyo-e is a Japanese artistic movement oriented towards the popular pleasures of the urban bourgeoisie of the time through woodcut prints. These Japanese prints greatly influenced European painting and, in particular, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin as well as the Impressionists.
Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese draughtsman, painter and engraver of the 18th century, specialising in ukiyo-e. Taccia has created the Ukiyo-e Urushi Hokusai as a tribute to his work and to this Japanese art. The model, made of ebonite and with a perfect cylindrical shape, is covered with urushi lacquer, which has an unmistakable brown colour. The Japanese Master then shifted the colour to bright, flamboyant tones – orange, then yellow, and finally silver – highlighting the main colour, Koi-Ai blue found in Hokusai’s drawings.
Its beautiful, stylized clip is gold plated.
The nib:
The two-tone 14-carat gold nib is made by Sailor and is available in sizes EF, F, MF, M, B, MS and Z.
You will receive your Urushi Hokusai Ukiyo-e fountain pen by Taccia on a beautiful cream-coloured cloth, in a splendid wooden box, which is itself housed in a box illustrated with Hokusai’s drawing “The great wave of Kanagawa”, which main colour is the Koi-Ai blue. The box also contains a purple kimono case for your fountain pen to accompany you on a daily basis, a bottle of Koi-Ai blue ink and a postcard with the drawing on the box.
As Taccia chooses the kimono case randomly, the colour of the one shown in the photos will not necessarily match that of the one you receive.
