1911 Ninja Shachihoko Fountain pen by Sailor – Limited edition!

As a tribute to the Ninjas who were employed from the Muromachi period to the Edo period (1336-1868) by feudal lords at war in various regions, Sailor has created a magnificent series of four 1911 fountain pens: the 1911 Large Yuubi Maki-e series. It follows on from the first series created in spring 2024.

This time, the Japanese brand has focused on the weapons used by Ninjas. The Ninja is one of the most mysterious figures in Japanese history, and his weapons are just as unique. When wielding a Katana, the Ninja did not fight in the traditional style, but concentrated on a quick and reliable strike to end the fight quickly.

Ninjas also used the Kusarigama to block the opponent’s weapon or to restrain his neck or legs, thus limiting his movements. Shuriken (throwing stars) were not only thrown as weapons, but were also used to make noise, striking trees and rocks to instil fear in their enemies. Ninja weapons were therefore not only tools of combat, but also instruments of psychological warfare and deception.

Sailor has represented the Ninjas in a yuubi maki-e work worthy of the greatest Japanese lacquer masters. It spent over a year working on the drawings to achieve a result that was realistic rather than caricatured.

Set on a transparent grey resin base, the 1911 Shachihoko features a Ninja in action, armed with his weapon, the shachihoko. The fountain pen’s trims are rhodium-plated. Of particular note is the central ring at the bottom of the cap, engraved with the brand name, among other things.

The nib

The 14-carat gold nib is covered with rhodium plating. It is superbly engraved and available in sizes F, MF and M.
