The Rei Urushi series is a prestigious collection by Sailor. The Wajima Tamenuri, created by artist Masanori Sumi, is one of its most exquisite examples. Masanori Sumi began learning the art of lacquerwork at a lacquer workshop in the mid-1970s. He is one of the few lacquer artisans to have mastered every stage of the Wajima-nuri production process, from preparing the wood to applying the base coat, intermediate coats and finishing coats, through to polishing.

Tame-nuri is a finishing technique that involves applying an intermediate layer of colored lacquer — vermilion in this case — followed by numerous layers of transparent lacquer. This transparent lacquer, with its light, translucent reddish-brown hue, creates a soft and subtle intermediate tone. This finish enhances the depth and unique character of this magnificent lacquer fountain pen, whose brilliance becomes increasingly pronounced with use. Over time, the underlying color will gradually reveal itself more vividly.

The body and cap are made from ebonite, while the section is made from black resin. Unrivalled in its sobriety and refinement, this fountain pen features a cap whose perfect shape covers the body with flamboyant aestheticism. With no clip, it exudes extraordinary elegance. The central part is decorated with a stylised ring and a thin ring at the section. Both are gold-plated, as you’d expect from Sailor.

The nib:

Its nib, in superbly engraved 21-carat gold, is available in size M.

The fountain pen – lying on royal blue velvet – is presented in a magnificent paulownia wood box (nicknamed the “imperial tree”) surrounded by a solid ribbon.
