3776 Century Tortoise Fountain pen by Platinum

The 3776 Century Tortoise is made of celluloid, a plant-based material produced by the gelation of cellulose nitrate and camphor. As well as perfectly imitating natural materials, celluloid has an exceptional shine when polished. It is also extremely soft to the touch. It should be noted that working with this material is not easy, quite the contrary: it requires a specialised know-how that is not available to all manufacturers. What’s more, working with celluloid requires special techniques and a very long drying time for the material (up to six months). This is why brands reserve this material for a very high-end category of fountain pens.

It’s in the colours of the shell of a species of tortoise that Platinum has created its 3776 Century Tortoise. Its trims are gold-plated, including the clip and the central ring beautifully engraved with the model’s name. The 3776 Century Tortoise features the revolutionary ‘Slip & Seal’ system: inside the cap is a spring linked to an internal plastic cap that provides a perfect airtight seal. This patented system prevents the ink from evaporating and the nib from drying out for up to 2 years without the fountain pen being used.

The nib:

The nib is made of 14-carat gold and is beautifully engraved, notably with an illustration of Mount Fuji (which rises to 3776 metres). Its breather hole is heart-shaped at Platinum. The fountain pen is available in three sizes: F, M and B.
