Souverän M800 Red/Black Fountain pen by Pelikan – a legendary model for sovereign writing
The M400 was first introduced in 1950. In the 1980s, Pelikan named it Souverän, even though the Germans already called it the “Stresemann”, after the secretary of state of the Weimar Republic, known for his striped suits. The success of this model led to the decision to produce different sizes, of which the M800 is twice the larger version.
Unrivalled craftsmanship:
It takes a lot of design work to achieve such a contrast in colour and brilliance. The central part of the body, made of cellulose acetate, is produced using an in-house manufacturing technique whose secret is still jealously guarded. Many manufacturing steps are required to obtain a thin striped sheet which is then carefully checked before being transformed into a cylinder into which the resin body and as well as the rest of the device is slid.
The top of the body and the top of the grip are made of high quality turned resin. Its typical double ring at the end of the body and at the base of the cap, as well as the ring at the grip, are then integrated into the object with precision in order to obtain a perfect fit between the different parts. The final step is the careful polishing of the fountain pen to give it its full lustre.
The various rings, the top of the cap and the clip are 24-carat gold-plated. Other elegant details include the finial with the famous bird at the top of the cap and the magnificent clip in the shape of a pelican’s beak. The fountain pen is filled by an integrated piston. An example of Pelikan’s fabulous workmanship: each fountain pen is assembled by hand.
The nib:
The magnificent two-tone nib with the brand logo is made of 18-carat gold with partial rhodium plating. It is available in sizes EF, F, M and B.
