The expert’s opinion: we were already familiar with the Homo Sapiens in its very first version in 2010, and we were bowled over at the time. Since then, the brand has improved its masterpiece, particularly in terms of the material itself, which has a particularly soft feel – incredible for hardened lava. The resin, of course, plays a major role in this. The quality of the materials used is undeniable: in addition to lava, bronze, titanium and 18-carat gold. The trims are quite simply splendid, including the central ring, the finial and the famous (articulated!) clip symbolising Florence’s Ponte Vecchio. The nib, previously made by a third party, has been designed by the brand itself for several years now. We were impressed by both its feel and its flexibility… The Homo Sapiens Lava Bronze is undoubtedly one of the brand’s greatest successes, and a benchmark throughout the world of fountain pens.

This innovative material is the result of a patented formula kept secret by the Florentine brand. It is highly resistant to heat, impact and corrosion. It is the combination of these two materials that gives the fountain pen its extremely soft feel. Let’s add that it also absorbs moisture from the hand when writing.
The cap closes with the Visconti hook safe lock. A slight twisting motion is all it takes to close the fountain pen, while you open it by pushing the cap down and twisting it slightly.
Visconti chose bronze, gold-plated, for the trims of Homo Sapiens in reference to the Bronze Age, when the first writing systems were invented. The brand has adorned the body with a magnificent ring engraved with the model’s name. The cap has also been embellished with two rings and its famous laser-engraved articulated clip. Its finial The cabochon displaying the brand logo at the top completes the look.
The fountain pen has a vacuum filling system. To fill the fountain pen, unscrew and pull the knob at the top of the barrel: the metal plunger extends from the reservoir to its stop point (seal). Next, dip the fountain pen into the ink bottle and perform the reverse operation, pushing the piston back into the barrel (before screwing the knob back in). This is when the air-ink exchange takes place and the reservoir (1.5 ml capacity) fills (3/4 full).
Visconti has equipped its creation with a superbly engraved 18-carat pink gold nib. It is available in five sizes: EF, F, M, B and Stub 1.1.
