Description
King of Pens Elephant in the Moonlight Fountain pen by Sailor – Limited edition to 50 pieces worldwide
The Japanese brand presents an exceptional series of limited-edition King of Pens maki-e fountain pens entitled “Animals in the Moonlight”, or “Dobutsu to Gekkou” in Japanese. This collection pays tribute to the beauty and symbolic strength of animals, enhanced by the centuries-old craftsmanship of the maki-e art.
The sixth model in this series is dedicated to the elephant: Zou to Gekkou (“Elephant in the Moonlight”). Its silhouette evokes a timeless creature, a symbol of wisdom, endurance, and grace. Under the gentle glow of the moon, the elephant moves forward with quiet strength along a path that seems to have existed forever. Its steady stride expresses patience and serenity rather than haste. A silent presence revealing a natural beauty that never seeks to impose itself.
The precious urushi lacquer:
The King of Pens is crafted from ebonite and covered with urushi lacquer. Obtained exclusively from the sap of the Japanese lacquer tree (an Asian species), urushi has been used for thousands of years as a protective coating once applied to objects and allowed to cure. It possesses remarkable resistance to corrosion, scratches, and even impacts. Fountain pens crafted in this way therefore benefit from an exceptional lifespan, capable of extending across several generations.
The colour of urushi lacquer changes subtly depending on its exposure to light, creating incomparable depth, brilliance, and luminosity. Numerous layers are required to achieve such a result, involving a considerable investment of time, as each layer must dry for between 3 and 7 days. Depending on the number of applications, which may reach up to 20 layers, several weeks and often several months are necessary to create such a masterpiece, followed by meticulous finishing work.
The maki-e technique:
The motifs are created using the traditional maki-e technique, in which ultra-fine brushes are used to paint the designs before they are delicately sprinkled with gold and silver powder. This highly intricate work, carried out with exceptional precision by the artist Ikki Moroike, requires extraordinary patience and concentration. As every stage is performed entirely by hand and cannot be exactly reproduced, each piece is naturally a unique work of art.
The artist’s hand-painted signature, together with the serial number, appears on the barrel of the fountain pen.
When the barrel is unscrewed, one discovers far more than a simple threaded section designed to receive the cartridge or converter. Instead, a remarkable filling assembly is revealed, every bit as impressive as the nib itself. The upper part of the section is striking not only for its length (more than 30 mm), but also for the quality of the material and the sophistication of its design. Two small vertical windows, positioned on either side of the mechanism, allow the ink level in the converter to be checked at a glance.
The nib:
The two-tone nib is exceptional, both for its imposing size and its remarkable proportions. Measuring 26 mm in length and exceeding one centimetre in width (11 mm), it is an impressive presence. Crafted from 21-carat gold, it is enhanced with rhodium and 24-carat gold plating. It is available in M and B nib sizes.
The King of Pens Elephant in the Moonlight fountain pen by Sailor is presented in a magnificent wooden box and comes complete with its converter, an ink bottle, two cartridges, a pen pouch and a polishing cloth.
