Souverän M400 Tortoiseshell-White fountain pen by Pelikan – a legendary model for sovereign handwriting

The M400 was first produced in 1950. In the 1980s, Pelikan gave it the name Souverän, even though the Germans already called it the “Stresemann”, after the Secretary of State of the Weimar Republic, who was known for his striped suits. It was so successful that the brand decided to make it available in a range of sizes.

An outstanding piece of craftsmanship:

Fabulous design work is needed to achieve such contrast in colour and such brilliance. The central part of the body in cellulose acetate is made using an in-house manufacturing technique whose secret is still jealously guarded. Numerous manufacturing stages are required to obtain a thin striped sheet, which is then carefully checked before being transformed into a cylinder into which the resin body and the rest of the device are slid.

Both the top of the body and the top of the section are made from high-quality turned resin. Its typical double ring at the end of the body and at the base of the cap, as well as the ring at the section, are then precisely integrated into the object to ensure a perfect fit between the different parts. As for the final step, it is a thorough polishing of the fountain pen to give it its full lustre. The body of Tortoiseshell-White is transparent.

The various rings, the top of the cap and the clip are gold-plated. Other elegant details include the finial with the famous bird at the top of the cap and the magnificent clip in the shape of a pelican’s beak. The fountain pen is filled by an integrated piston. The nib:

The magnificent nib decorated with the brand’s logo is made of 14-carat gold. It is available in sizes EF, F, M and B.
